How to test Kidney function?
Collecting the blood samples, compare the urea, creatinine, calcium, nitrogen level
- Urine Examination: A physical examination is done, which records the color odour, quality, specific gravity of the urine.
- Serum Urea: It is considered as glomerular dysfunction, which causes renal dysfunction. The standard serum urea value is 20-45 mg/dl.
- Blood Urea Nitrogen(BUN): It can be determined from serum urea level by calculating molecular weight and contribution of nitrogen in serum urea.
- Serum Creatinine Level: It is a marker of liver function. The problem of glomerular filtration can cause high serum creatinine levels.
- Dilution Test- It measures the working of tubules. For less reabsorption of tubules, urine becomes diluted.
How can the test be performed?
KFT usually requires a 24 hours' urine sample and blood test.
Can KFT be done on an empty stomach?
It is necessary that you should not eat or drink anything other than water for 8-12 hours' before the test.
What are the symptoms and signs of Kidney diseases?
The symptoms and signs of kidney diseases include fatigue, poor appetite, difficulty in sleeping, swelling or puffiness around the eyes or in the face, wrists, abdomen, thighs or ankles, bloody colored urine, decrease in the amount of urine, pain in mid-back, below the ribs, near the location of kidneys.
